Endless Surveillance: Light, Shadow, Sound, Focus

Photography and video have become an accessible, everyday activity since the emergence of the Smart Phones nearly a decade now. Almost everything gets recorded, documented, posted and archived in social media platforms. The divide between private and public has been blurred and almost unrecognizable. Phone cameras flirt in public spheres, while CCTV cameras keep an ubiquitous watch over all public activity. In such times how creative and engaging can videos be? Can videos deliver truth? Ajay uses the phone to translate his modern day musings into short animated videos. The videos are created with mobile apps and features the artist as the protagonist. The narratives are in essence a next generation metaphor of life caught in between the real and the virtual space. The series of videos by Rishi Raj creates an experience similar to that of a shadow theatre. He manipulates juxtaposed images and sounds, to bring out the chaos and cacophony of the pseudo nationalist surge the nation witnesses. His work also consists of installations that use shadows to bring out the narrative. For Shubhankar Chandere, “looking is a form of thinking.” The artist uses his surroundings to create narratives that are continuous, superimposed and ambiguous by intent. He explores the infinite possibility of spaces, where everything and everyone can have vulnerable meanings and behaviours. These spaces can instigate creation of memories, by triggering thought cycles that can take any direction according to the viewer’s mind. It can be anything from one’s own self-discovery to a complete sense of ambiguity. As the artist traverses his locality, he drives the visuals and evolves it into a poetic narrative of landscapes, lives and structures. He reads ignorance, faith, disappointment and a state of misbalance in his “urban village”. On a personal front, he is attempting to see every vulnerable side of his own individuality and integrate them with collective positions.
