The Portrait Museum can be defined through two words – Identity and Archive. I presume these two words hold a lot of importance today. All kinds of identities are being questioned and the feeling of crisis is being felt. In the same way, people have been experiencing the loss and the desire to hold on to the past have immensely grown. Words like ‘missing’, ‘loss’, ‘traditions’, ‘roots’, ‘void’, ‘uncertainty’ are now part of the youth’s dictionary.

As much as the idea of identity is important, at the same time it is important to archive. By documenting time, we can actually revisit the past to expand our knowledge of the bygone era and enrich our views. In academics there is certain lapse in incorporating these two elements together to strengthen the ideas of identity and archive.

The aim of The Portrait Museum is to try and address these issues of the self and the importance of preserving the memories through archiving. The artists have attempted to address this through a collective process of answering each other’s question of self and the question of identity.  Different zones and institutions showcase different academic practices, however a moment of stillness can always be witnessed. This stillness had to be questioned and brought forward by bringing them out of their comfort zone.
