Geography of Despair: Mapping erosion, displacement, greed and suffering – Students’ Biennale•4th Edition

Geography of Despair: Mapping erosion, displacement, greed and suffering

Dipin, Prarthana, Sangeeta and Shubhankar use drawing to depict the cycles of the landscape. Their strokes on paper tell the tales of suffering, loss, pain and wounds inflicted upon the people and land that nurtured them. Barren land, landfills, nature and its exploitations, a phenomenon like erosion, depletion, intrusion and activities like cultivation, settlement and migration of people from the elements that constitute their work. Geography has evolved or rather deteriorated into a metaphor of the struggle of the people settled on it. Even a map of a region becomes a body denoting the gradual change of the topology through ages, transforming into uninhabitable regions. The drawings are improvisations of regular sketches, while some are deliberate compositions as an alternative to painting.
