The Self Extends – Students’ Biennale•4th Edition

The Self Extends

Two individual Projects, ’Indelible’ by Pintu Das (Rabindra Bharati University) and ‘An Insignificant Fragment’ by Biswajit Mondal (Government College of Arts & Craft, Calcutta) constitute ‘The Self Extends’. Each project is a narration of the artists’ family occupations. Pintu Das’s insights into the settlement of families of washermen through photographic projections, videos, impressions, found and sculpted objects reflect responses of an artist in terms of performances, interest in ethnographic objects, printing, sculpting, photography and video. The temperament of the presentation and sheer texture of the portrayal of things, sites and people convey a sense of hierarchy and history. Biswajit Mondal’s exhaustive depiction of the motif of glass jars at his humble tea stall is a reclamation of an artist’s sense of empowerment, justice and dignity.
