Home, Paradox, Conflicts and Home Again – Students’ Biennale•4th Edition

Home, Paradox, Conflicts and Home Again

A home is often about a time, more than about a place. Home is also a sense of nostalgia, a kind of longing, a getaway; it creates different forms of picture for different people. And for the homeless ‘home’ is just a shadow to rest under. A home is often associated with family, community, mother tongue, or even a geographically homogenous region. Home is also an equally contested space where hierarchy, prejudice, domination, subjugation, family legacy, pride, dispute, envy and distrust exist. Devika, Nipun, Sanal and Shinoy together address the issues related to life at home. They converted a dilapidated house in the village into a home of works, also including objects or relics they found in the space as reminders of a past the house may have witnessed. The drawings, paintings and sculptures here are subtle images that express angst and discontent the adolescent people are subjected to, in domestic life. The work also points towards the social inequalities that are still unresolved in this part of the world. Despite the complexities, a home remains a home; a realm of memories.
