Vinayak S Katenahalli

Bangalore University, Visual Art Department

The installation uses traditional material and method of creating rangoli – the culture of creating patterns on the floor or ground using coloured rice, sand or powder and which is often thought to bring good luck to homes. The ground forms the canvas to map the concept of farming as a ritual juxtaposing the earth and the representational process of farming. The farm and farming practices such as growing paddy and vegetables are recreated and depicted on the ground through the drawings. The elaborate patterns also hold day-to-day representation of farming activities, creating a complete picture of the life of farmers. Moreover, the act of drawing the rangoli in itself is part of the daily activities for the farming community.
